Man blames Coca-Cola for poisoning by lover

A MAN in Beijing has been arrested for damaging Coca-Cola's reputation by claiming to be poisoned by mercury in a Sprite drink, when he'd actually been poisoned by his lover.

The lover and her partner in the poisoning plot, a security guard, were arrested for attempted homicide, yesterday's Beijing Times reported.

Ma Sai, 21, claimed to be poisoned when dining with Liu Xiaojing, 28, at a Beijing hot-pot restaurant in November.

The two were having an affair. Liu decided to kill Ma after learning Ma was unfaithful to her, she told police.

A security guard, Gao Xingyuan, taught her how to put mercury to Ma's food and drink to kill him.

But the plot failed in two attempts because Ma noticed the abnormal taste of the tainted food and didn't eat it.

At the hot-pot restaurant, Liu brought 10 barometers, broke them, took out mercury and poured it into a Sprite before Ma arrived.

Ma swallowed down the drink and vomited large quantities of mercury balls. He was sent to hospital, where Liu confessed to him.

Ma said he lied to police because he didn't want to incriminate Liu. The poisoning was thus blamed on Coca-Cola.

But police investigation cleared Coca-Cola from the accusation.

Ma and Liu confessed the truth.

Liu told police she decided to continue trying to injure Ma after seeing him with a new girlfriend.

She asked her husband to have some hooligans beat Ma in the hospital and had Gao pour sulphuric acid on Ma's face during the beating.
