Man blows 6m yuan as parents think he is in Oxford

A man has squandered millions of yuan his parents sent him during his six years in Beijing as he lied to them that he was pursuing advanced studies in Oxford University.

The 31-year-old man, a native of Jiangsu Province, has spent 6 million yuan (US$940,800) in the past six years, including about 2 million on a girlfriend who broke up with him after his parents stopped sending him the money, the Beijing Morning Post reported today.

The man, his name undisclosed, then borrowed about 400,000 yuan from loan sharks but couldn't pay back. In despair, he tried to commit suicide yesterday and was prevented by firefighters.

The man failed to go to Oxford University after he graduated from a college in Dalian, Liaoning Province. He went to Beijing six years ago and lied to his parents that he was studying in the famous university in the UK.

Learning his trauma and suicide attempt, his parents have decided to forgive him, the newspaper said.
