Man brandishing knives injures 8 in Hangzhou
A MAN wielding two knives injured eight people yesterday morning in Hangzhou, capital of eastern Zhejiang Province.
The 33-year-old, surnamed Liu, attacked one neighbor with two knives and then, while chasing other neighbors, wounded five people on the street at about 8:30am, said the Hangzhou municipal public security bureau.
The injuries to the six victims were not life-threatening, added the bureau.
The man shortly afterwards ran into a nearby Walmart store and was held there by police at about 9am.
Two police officers were bitten during a struggle, said the bureau.
“We noticed a topless man with two knives walking into the store and informed the police immediately,” said store manager Chen Danfang.
“We called all our male staff to come to the vegetable section where the man was wandering about.
“At the same time, female colleagues were evacuating customers to the office area,” she said.
Police arrived four minutes later, restrained the man and carried him out of the store, she said.
“It was really scary. You don’t know what’s happening and could be attacked at any moment,” said customer Wu Yayun.
Jobless Liu is from Nong’an County of northeast China’s Jilin Province, said police.
An investigation into the incident is under way.
