Man caught for stealing Taiwan general's medal

BEIJING police arrested a man who stole a medal of honor awarded to Hu Lian, the late Taiwan general and commander of Kinmen Island defense forces. The man was arrested on a train yesterday afternoon and the stolen medal was recovered.

The 76-year-old thief, surnamed Qiao, was seen in a surveillance video footage removing the medal from a showcase in a memorial hall dedicated to Hu Lian in Kinmen last Friday.

Taiwan police said the suspected mainland visitor used 2 minutes and 20 seconds to open the showcase and take the medal, which is worth at least 1 million yuan (US$159,600).

The Taiwan Criminal Investigation Bureau said it will soon to get the medal back and give the video footage to Beijing police, according to a report on www.taihainet.com.

Only 209 such medals have been awarded since 1929 to high-ranking generals under the Nationalist Government led by Chiang Kai-Shek. It is said the medal could be used as a proof of immunity from capital punishment.
