Man charged over scheme that minted a fortune

A TECHNICIAN desperate to raise funds for his terminally ill father created a machine that produced 1.53 million fake 1-yuan coins in Zhejiang Province.

Wenzhou City People's Procuratorate Office has charged the man with counterfeiting and selling the coins which allegedly brought him more than 500,000 yuan (US$73,251).

The man may face life in jail or even the death penalty considering the huge value of money, yesterday's Qianjiang Evening News reported.

The man, 30, surnamed Jiang, is a native of Mianyang City in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

In 2007, his father was diagnosed with liver cancer and needed a transplant, which could cost 200,000 yuan, far beyond his income of 4,000 yuan per month, he told police.

After unsuccessfully trying to borrow cash, he decided to make his own and even rigged the machine to a mobile phone to alert him over production problems.
