Man compensated for police detention

A YOUNG man from Henan Province has been compensated for being wrongly accused of defaming his hometown city government and detained for eight days. A defamation suit has also been withdrawn, Qin Yuhai, Henan's vice governor and the province's police director, told www.people.com.cn on Thursday.
They did not reveal the amount of the compensation.
Qin apologized to Wang Shuai for the local police's behavior and said it revealed they were not enforcing the law correctly. He said provincial police will investigate the case to help prevent such incidents occurring again.
Wang, 24, a native of Henan's Lingbao City, was seized by police from his office in Shanghai on March 6. He was accused of defaming the Lingbao government by publishing online posts saying the government had misused 28 square kilometers of farmland in his hometown of Dawang Town to develop an industrial zone. This resulted in a loss of income for more than 30,000 local farmers.
The government agreed to pay the farmers an annual rent of 1,200 yuan (US$175) per mu (666 square meters) of land - far less than their income. Wang's family, for example, made about 8,000 yuan per mu a year from its fruit trees.
Police said they released Wang because they lacked sufficient proof.
Wang later learned he was released because his family agreed to uproot their fruit trees to make way for the industrial zone.
