Man considers compensation offer
POLICE in Leibo County, Sichuan Province, have announced they would offer compensation of 100,000 yuan (US$15,098) and a job to Luo Kaiyou, who was detained for 21 months over 20 years ago on suspicion of killing his ex-wife and was proved innocent recently.
The announcement was made at a public gathering on Tuesday held by Leibo police to clear Luo's name, the West China Metropolis Daily reported.
The other three men who were detained in the case were offered the same amount. Luo was also offered a job at a public institution, as he was not satisfied with the original offer.
The other three reportedly agreed to the original compensation offer.
Luo, 46, was accused of murdering his ex-wife, Li Peixiang, in 1989 and was held in custody with his father and brothers for 21 months.
Luo recently found Li in Tianjin City in north China and persuaded her to tell police last Thursday that she had left home in 1989 to marry -another man.
At Thursday's gathering, police showed evidence which proved Li was still alive and cleared Luo's name.
Luo said he was only considering the offer of compensation. He reportedly had spent 1 million yuan searching for Li.
