Man critical after setting himself on fire
A MAN is still in critical condition after setting himself ablaze when a demolition crew allegedly broke into his house in Beiing.
Xi Xinzhu suffered burns to 10 percent of his skin and is in danger in hospital, reported Beijing Times today.
Xi's wife told the newspaper that a demolition team wearing anti-riot suits stormed their house in Haidian District on Monday, one day before a deadline set by local authorities for them to leave.
Xi became angry and doused himself with gasoline, threatening to light it if crew members approached, she said. The workers shouted "go on, light up," she told reporters.
However, the workers quickly doused the fire and sent him to hospital, the report said.
They demolished the house while the couple were at hospital. Village authorities say the family is entitled to get a three-bedroom apartment and cash for moving out before the deadline, said the newspaper.
