Man demands justice for mother's death
A GOVERNMENT worker is asking higher authorities in south China's Guangdong Province to investigate the death of his mother, who he claimed was beaten by hitmen hired by a government driver over demolition dispute.
Zhu Guoyu, who works at Maoming City Foreign Affairs Bureau, told Shanghai Daily today that he believed some officials in Gaozhou County are covering up Ling Yuanguo, a former driver for the local government, who allegedly threatened Zhu's family to relocate and make room for his multi-storey house in August 2009.
Zhu refused to trade their 39-square-meter house for 200,000 yuan (US$30,340) as offered by Ling, which was half the market price. Undeterred, Ling's workers began construction, which caused Zhu's house to crack.
Zhu said he felt helpless after making numerous complaints. Then, on May 1 last year, her mother tried to stop the construction and was beaten by five unidentified young men. She died in hospital a month later. Zhu posted a will online, claiming he would starve himself to death unless "justice is done."
A medical report by Gaozhou People's Hospital found the 66-year-old woman died from heart arrest, which had no direct connection with the fight. Zhu said he couldn't accept the conclusion as the autopsy was not done immediately after her death.
"My mother's corpse was left rotten in the funeral parlor and our relatives were not allowed to get close by police," Zhu said today. He said he was attacked by two unidentified men with bricks near his dormitory on the night of September 1 and he had reported to police.
Gaozhou police said they were still investigating the case and Ling had been punished for building the unauthorized house, according to Gaozhou government.
