Man detained for attacking nurse in southwest China
A man has been detained for attacking a nurse in southwest China's Yunnan Province, further straining the already tense doctor-patient relationship, local authorities said on Monday.
The incident occurred on Sunday when a knife-wielding man, surnamed Zhang, attacked the nurse on duty at the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University in Yunnan's capital city Kunming, according to the local public security bureau.
The 30-year-old nurse, mother of a four-year-old child, is under intensive care at the hospital.
Police said that Zhang, 33, did not know the nurse. The bureau is still investigating reports that the man suffers from psychological disorder.
The incident occurred two days after a similar case involving an 84-year-old patient who attacked a doctor with a knife at the Fujian Provincial Capital hospital in Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian Province. The doctor is in stable condition. The attacker is said to be unsatisfied with a vocal cord operation he had at the hospital.
Doctor-patient relations in China have been fraught with tension in recent years, as frustration, misunderstanding and dissatisfaction have result in violence.
Last month, a man was executed in east China's Zhejiang Province for fatally stabbing one doctor and wounding two others.
