Man detained for molesting woman during water festival

A man was detained for molesting a young woman during an annual festival in which people celebrate by splashing water on each other in Yunnan Province, local news portal Yunnan.cn reported today.
The man surnamed Bi was nabbed when he was found touching the breasts and waist of a woman during the festival, which fell on Tuesday in Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Xishuangbanna, Hongjing City, the report said.
He was given a five-day detention, said the report.
The woman was cited as saying someone had splashed water in her face and she couldn’t open her eyes. Bi then began to pull her clothes before sexually assaulting her, the report said.
Bi reportedly said he had drunk some wine with friends before joining the celebration.
Police detained another 22 people for splashing water maliciously during the festival, which marks the beginning of a new year according to Dai customs in Xishuangbanna. People splash each other with water to ward off the old and welcome the new.
In recent years, there have been other reports of women being sexually assaulted during the festival.
