Man detained in hotpot poison case that killed entrepreneur

A township official in southern Guangdong Province was detained on suspicion of poisoning a local billionaire to death because they had a dispute, according to a Xinhua report yesterday.

Police said Huang Guang, deputy director of Bajia Town Agricultural Office in Yangchun City, allegedly put gelsemium elegan, a poisonous herb, in a cat meat hotpot he had with the victim Long Liyuan, 49, in a local restaurant on December 23.

Long was the executive board chairman of the Yuanxing Wood Industry Corporation. He went to lunch with Huang and his friend Huang Wen. All the three, including Huang Guang himself, ate the cat meat and began to throw up after a while.

They were sent to the hospital immediately. Long, who ate more than the other two, died 20 minutes later. Huang Guang and Huang Wen survived after medical treatment.

Police said Huang Guang embezzled Long's fund for private purpose after helping Long to secure a forest leasing contract. The fund abuse caused a dispute between the two and Huang decided to murder Long.

Long's family claimed that Long gave Huang more than 3.5 million yuan (US$556,085) to help get the forest leasing contract, settle issues with affected villagers and built ties with local authorities.

They said Huang embezzled Long's money to cover losses incurred in lottery. That could be the motivation of Huang's murder plot. But this has not been confirmed by the police.
