Man detained over spreading rumor

A MAN in central China's Hubei Province has been detained for creating and spreading a rumor that the man standing on trial for a deadly traffic accident in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province, was another man hired by the suspect's family.

Xiong Zhongjun, an unemployed resident of Hubei's Ezhou City who used the online name "Liu Yiming," first posted the rumor online on July 21, the day after the driver Hu Bin was sentenced to three years, Ezhou police told Xinhua news agency.

Hu, 20, a university student, was speeding in a Mitsubishi sports car, when the car struck Tan Zhuo, 25, on a pedestrian crossing on May 7. Tan flew five meters into the air before he hit the ground and died.

The identification rumor had been widely spread among Netizens and caused a wide public outcry, prompting the local court to clarify the man on trial was the suspect Hu himself.

But Xiong, in the following days, published another eight posts showing "evidence" to support his claim and alleged the local media and courts' reaction to clarify the rumor was helping conceal the truth.

Ezhou police detained Xiong for 10 days last Friday after confirming he had concocted and spreading the rumor.
