Man devotes 'whole life' to caring for street dogs

A HOMELESS, poor man who has cared for more than 1,000 street dogs in Nanjing City in the past 11 years said the dogs are his "whole life.''

With no wife or children, the man, surnamed Zhu, lives with the dogs on the streets, beneath a pedestrian overpass and at the entrance of subway stations.

Some of the dogs have become sick, and Zhu has had to let them go, according to a report by China News Service.

"I have no money to take them to the veterinarian," Zhu said.

Some 26 dogs have been sent for veterinary care by a volunteer organization of pet lovers.

Passers-by move quickly when passing Zhu and his dogs. One dog died yesterday morning, and begun to smell. Zhu soon played funeral music for the dead dog.

Some residents told reporters they were concerned about the worsening of sanitation conditions.

Zhu, in his 50s, said he has been feeding more than 1,000 stray dogs in the past year. He said he harbored more than 100 dogs at one time.

Left by his wife years ago, Zhu sold his house and lives with the pets, mostly on his government subsidy of 400 yuan (US$62.75) to 500 yuan a month.

He earns some extra money by carrying passengers using his small moped.

A pet lover surnamed Zhang cried as she listened to Zhu.

Zhang volunteered that she would "help sometimes with the cleaning work."
