Man dies as onlookers fail to help

AN 83-year-old man in Fuzhou, capital of Fujian Province, died after falling on a sidewalk while a group of people watched him lying there without offering help.

A witness, surnamed Chen, said he saw the white-haired man fall to the ground near an intersection on Wednesday, the Southeast Express reported yesterday.

The man, surnamed Zheng, was immediately surrounded by a crowd of passers-by, who just watched him shivering and bleeding on the ground, Chen told the publication.

A few minutes later, two women arrived and tried to help him up. One searched the man's pockets for medicine, asking if he had a cardiac arrest. But they soon drew back when some onlookers warned they could face trouble if they were held responsible for the man's fall.

The newspaper said someone told the women their actions would be recorded by a road surveillance camera.

After hesitating, the women stood up and called for an ambulance and police. Zheng was pronounced dead after paramedics arrived.
