Man executed for trafficking 22 babies

A MAN convicted of trafficking 22 infants has been executed in central China鈥檚 Henan Province, the Supreme People鈥檚 Court said in a statement yesterday.

Following an order issued by the president of the top court, the Zhengzhou Intermediate People鈥檚 Court executed Tan Yongzhi, the statement said, without giving an exact date.

Between 2008 and 2013, Tan, and two accomplices, 鈥渂ought鈥 the infants in southwest China鈥檚 Yunnan Province, transported them to Henan and sold them, the statement said. Four others involved in the crime also received prison sentences.

Tan, 69, was given the death sentence in 2014. He argued at his trial that he was 鈥渄oing good鈥 for childless couples.

鈥淚 just acted as a go-between,鈥 he was quoted as saying by the Zhengzhou Evening News.

The report said Tan paid 30,000 yuan (US$4,560) for boys and about 16,000 yuan for girls. He sold them for 1,000 to 3,000 yuan more than he paid.

China has stepped up its efforts to combat the trafficking of women and children. Last year, 1,362 people were charged with the crime, just half the number in 2012, according to figures from the Supreme Court.
