Man executed for trafficking 22 babies

A MAN convicted of trafficking 22 infants has been executed in central China’s Henan Province, the Supreme People’s Court said in a statement yesterday.

Following an order issued by the president of the top court, the Zhengzhou Intermediate People’s Court executed Tan Yongzhi, the statement said, without giving an exact date.

Between 2008 and 2013, Tan, and two accomplices, “bought” the infants in southwest China’s Yunnan Province, transported them to Henan and sold them, the statement said. Four others involved in the crime also received prison sentences.

Tan, 69, was given the death sentence in 2014. He argued at his trial that he was “doing good” for childless couples.

“I just acted as a go-between,” he was quoted as saying by the Zhengzhou Evening News.

The report said Tan paid 30,000 yuan (US$4,560) for boys and about 16,000 yuan for girls. He sold them for 1,000 to 3,000 yuan more than he paid.

China has stepped up its efforts to combat the trafficking of women and children. Last year, 1,362 people were charged with the crime, just half the number in 2012, according to figures from the Supreme Court.
