Man faces death penalty for raping 4 chained women

A MAN stood on trial in Hubei Province on Tuesday for allegedly raping four women, including two teenagers that he had abducted and kept in a basement with chains for a year. Two girls were rescued by a repairman who saw their note hidden in a broken TV.

The 39-year-old defendant Zeng Qiangbao admitted to raping the four victims and attempting to rape seven others "in search of gratification" in Wuhan, the provincial capital, from July 2007 to this May, the Wuhan Intermediate People's Court said.

But Zeng denied raping the two girls aged 16 and 19, as frequently as the prosecutors accused him of, saying the evidence provided by the prosecutors was not strong enough, Changjiang Times reported today.

The two girls, whose identities were not disclosed, said they suffered hunger, torture and sexual harassment after they were kidnapped by Zeng and locked up in the basement in Qingshan District last year.

The prosecutors demanded a death penalty for Zeng at the trial. But the court did not hand down a verdict.
