Man fired gun and set dogs upon noisy dancers

A BEIJING resident kept awake by square dancers outside his home fired a shotgun and unleashed three Tibetan mastiffs to scare them off.

But while the dancers didn’t return, the 56-year-old, named Shi, may now be jailed for illegal possession of a firearm, Beijing Youth Daily reported yesterday.

At his trial on Tuesday, prosecutors said Shi had hidden the gun at his home in Changping District since 1994.

Shi said he purposely built his house in a quiet spot near an abandoned factory because he had difficulty sleeping.

The last thing he expected was a group of women dancing every day and evening in a nearby square, said Shi.

Square dancing is a popular activity among middle-aged women across China, who gather in public spaces and dance to music on a stereo.

The loud music triggered headaches, Shi claimed.

Shi said he complained to the organizer, surnamed Guo, several times, but to no avail.

At around 8pm on August 30, Shi, who had been drinking, picked up the shotgun, went to confront the dancers and fired into the air.

“I just wanted to vent my anger,” Shi told the court.

Guo said Shi had threatened him with the gun and that they argued.

When Guo went to leave, he heard the shot and saw Shi setting three Tibetan mastiffs upon the terrified dancers, who ran away.

Police held Shi at his home, seizing the shotgun and four cartridges.

Prosecutors asked for Shi to be jailed for between six and nine months.

The court didn’t announce a verdict.

A resident in another complex close to a square where people like to dance, said he sympathized with Shi.

“It’s selfish to ignore others’ feelings,” he said.

“The government should assign a place for them to dance.”

In China, many people like to meet in parks and other places to exercise, practice martial arts and dance.
