Man gets 10 years in prison in foreign marriage swindle

A MAN from Heilongjiang Province who promised Chinese women introductions to marriage-minded foreigners was sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in prison for swindling 23 women out of 1.1 million yuan (US$176,613), Chaoyang district people's court in Jilin Provice said yesterday, according to the Beijing News.
Liu Xiaopeng, 39, defrauded the Chinese women between 2006 and 2011, the court said. Liu said he could arrange marriages with foreigners for Chinese women who wanted to emigrate to the United States or Canada through a company founded by his older brother and a Canadian.
But the company was not approved to serve as a marriage agency, officials said.
They found foreigners on online dating sites and promoted an exchange of information until the foreigners came to China to have a face-to-face meeting. The charge was 35,000 yuan to 80,000 yuan. If both parts agreed to get married, the company would offer visa application information.
A female victim, surnamed Jin, said she gave Liu 70,000 yuan to find a foreign match to emigrate to Canada. Jin demanded her money back since the meeting with the foreigner was a failure, but Liu did not return the money and avoided Jin, officials said.
Liu, who was detained, escaped on June 29, 2011 but was arrested again on March 18, 2012.
