Man gets death for arson attack that killed 11

THE man who set houses on fire in a village in Fujian Province and caused 11 deaths in January has been sentenced to death, Xinhua News Agency reported today.

The 46-year-old convict, Liu Quanshun, was also fined more than 4 million yuan (US$629,100) by the Nanping City Intermediate People's Court.

The court said Liu started an affair with a married woman surnamed Li in June 2009 and they moved to Putian City to live together in May 2011. Later, Li's husband and her father found them and called the police, accusing Liu of raping. Liu was led away for questioning but was freed the next day.

After his detention, Liu called the woman's father several times, demanding 20,000 yuan for compensation but was rejected.

To take his revenge, Liu poured gasoline on Li's house early on January 16 while the family was in sleep and set it ablaze. The fire soon spread to an adjacent house and burned 11 people to death, including Li's parents.

Liu fled the scene after his arson act and was caught by police in the afternoon of the same day.
