Man gets life sentence for hospital attack
An 18-year-old man who killed a doctor and injured three other hospital workers in a knife attack in Harbin, capital of Heilongjiang Province in March was sentenced to life in prison by the city's intermediate court this morning.
The convict, Li Mengnan, broke into the rheumatology and immunology department of Harbin Medical University's No. 1 Hospital on March 23, slit the neck of a 28-year-old intern, Wang Hao, and slashed three other doctors in the room, the prosecutors said.
They said Li made the attack in revenge for unsatisfactory treatment he received at the hospital. He was sentenced to life imprisonment instead of death because he was only 17 when he committed the crime.
Li was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a kind of arthritis that affects his spine. He stayed in the hospital for one week in April 2011 and went back for a review in March this year.
Li asked Dr Zhao Yanping, deputy director of the department, to prescribe him some Remicade, but Zhao said his tuberculosis should be treated first because the drug would have side-effects on his lungs.
Li thought Zhao didn't want to take up his case. Filled with anger and hatred, he bought a knife and went on a murderous rampage in the hospital, the court heard.
The court also ordered Li to pay 680,000 yuan (US$108,722) in compensation to Wang's parents and two other doctors.
