Man held after family poisoned with thallium

A MAN in Gansu Province has been detained for allegedly poisoning his ex-girlfriend and her eight family members with thallium.

The victims, aged from nine to 70, have recovered from taking the highly toxic chemical element, Southern Metropolis Daily reported today. None is in a dangerous condition.

51-year-old Cui Baozhu confessed he poisoned them in revenge after his ex-girlfriend Liu Jing ended their relationship at the end of 2007, the report said.

In June last year, Liu lost her hair, felt joint pain and her legs were partly paralyzed, the report said. Symptoms were relieved after treatment so she wasn't suspicious until she was poisoned again in June this year, the report said.

This time her daughter and boyfriend had the same symptoms. Doctors confirmed they had been poisoned by thallium and suggested the family call the police.

Three other family members who stayed at Liu's house were also poisoned. They all ate the same jar of soy sauce, and thallium was detected after police analysis.

Cui confessed he bought the thallium from a chemicals shop in Jiayuguan City, Gansu Province, in 2006. After Liu broke up with him, he twice put the powder into Liu's bottle of soy sauce, the report said.
