Man held after fatal bus fire

A MAN suspected of starting a bus fire that killed six people has been arrested, police in southwest China’s Guizhou Province said yesterday.

The suspect, surnamed Su, believed that his wife had been having an affair so he “took revenge on society” by igniting a container of gasoline on the bus, a police source told Xinhua news agency.

Su suffered slight burns to his back.

The fire broke out around 1pm on Thursday as the No. 237 bus was passing a primary school in the northern part of Guiyang City.

It spread so quickly that many people simply did not notice the emergency hammers needed to smash the windows in order to escape, according to survivors.

A 4-month-old boy and two women were among the six dead, with the oldest victim 71 years old.

The 35 injured, including one in a critical condition, are being treated at local hospitals.

Witness Qu Bin said he saw nearly 10 passengers jumping from the bus as flames erupted around them. Many of the survivors were badly burned, he said.

Local residents told The Beijing News that just last Sunday a bus on the same route had been involved in a rear-end collision with a motorcycle which resulted in the death of a 26-year-old local resident. His relatives had lodged complaints with city authorities, the newspaper was told.

On June 7 last year, a bus in the southeast coastal city of Xiamen burst into flames, leaving 47 people dead and 34 others injured.

Chen Shuizong, who died in the blaze, had sought to avenge personal grievances, police said. Notes found in his house indicated he had been planning an arson attack.

On June 5, 2009, a bus in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, caught fire, killing 25 passengers.

Police concluded the fire was set by an unemployed man who was one of the victims.
