Man held after fatal stabbing
A MAN has been detained after a French man and a Chinese woman were attacked in Beijing yesterday, police said.
The woman, from east China’s Shandong Province, died in hospital. The French man, who was also not named, was being treated for chest injuries, The Beijing News reported.
According to a report on sohu.com the victims were newlyweds.
Police said a 25-year-old man surnamed Gao had been detained after the attack.
He is said to be from Tonghua in northeast China’s Jilin Province.
Police said they had been unable to determine a motive behind the seemingly random attack, which happened near an outlet of Japanese retailer Uniqlo in the popular Sanlitun shopping area, but their investigations were continuing.
The newspaper carried reports from witnesses who said that a man holding a long knife had entered the store after the attack and cut a plastic dummy in two.
A video clip posted online showed the woman lying on the ground and bleeding from her stomach, while the foreigner tried to cover the wound with his left hand.
Police cordoned off the area for about an hour after the incident and the store also closed for some time.
