Man held after heart-op story proves false

A MAN alleged to have collected 240,000 yuan (US$36,485) in donations after he made up a story about a woman needing heart surgery yesterday gave himself up to police.

They said the 26-year-old Suzhou factory worker, surnamed Tong, had amassed around 50,000 followers on an Internet forum by pretending to be a young woman called Tong Yao, and making up stories about her life.

A year later, in June 2015, he set up another account, this time of a young woman who couldn’t afford a heart operation.

The fictitious Tong Yao added comments and called for support. Soon, almost 240,000 yuan had been pledged.

However, his scheme unravelled when someone discovered that the second account actually belonged to a man called Tong Chao.

Police in Suzhou, in east China’s Jiangsu Province, launched an investigation on January 21. Tong is now in police custody in Suzhou.
