Man held after kids attacked
A MAN was caught yesterday after he attacked and injured six students and a female parent with a knife at an elementary school on Tuesday, according to police in Maoming City, Guangdong Province.
The man, Liao Haiwang, 32, was caught about 1:50am yesterday while hiding in the woods near the school, police said.
Liao has a history of mental illness but police are still investigating whether it was a factor in the attack, China News Service reported.
A boy who was injured in the attack is still in intensive care while the others are in a stable condition, the report said.
The incident occurred at Baiwu Elementary School at 4:40pm on Tuesday when Liao "jumped from a tree with a knife in his hand and then ran into a crowd to attack the children," a witness told Southern Metropolis Daily.
A girl surnamed Su told the newspaper the students were going home at the time.
"He was very tall and he hacked at our heads," Su was cited as saying.
The man was laughing at the students in a strange way while everyone else was screaming desperately, Su added.
One of the boys who was injured told the newspaper he was near the school playground when the man hacked him on the head. The boy added that he felt great pain but he kept running with other students and then hid in a store.
The female parent, surnamed Gong, who was injured in the attack was protecting the children from the attacker, the report said, citing a witness.
About 300 people, including police, local government officers and residents, took part in the search for Liao.
