Man held as 3 die from eating poisoned candy
POLICE in China's Hebei Province said yesterday a man is being held in connection with the deaths earlier this month of two small children and a teenager who ate poisoned candy.
The suspect, surnamed Tu, is being questioned over a spate of incidents involving sweets laced with rat poison in Luan'nan County.
Police said they began investigations on November 3, when a two-year-old boy died and his mother required hospital treatment after they ate candy together.
On Sunday, a six-year-old boy died and two other children were left seriously ill after eating candy picked up from a roadside.
Family members later said that the children were discovered "foaming at the mouth soon after they had eaten the candy."
The following day a 17-year-old youth, surnamed Li, fell ill and died on Wednesday after eating candy brought home by his father.
Officers traced the first poisoning to a 66-year-old man, surnamed Pei, who fell ill after eating candy from his local market stall and was sent to hospital on November 1.
Pei left hospital on Sunday but was still not fully conscious yesterday, police said.
Tu was apprehended at his home on Tuesday, county police said yesterday.
The suspect allegedly told the police he had a fight with Pei earlier over a sex-health product business both were engaged in.
In retaliation, Tu bought four candies and smeared rat poison on them, it is claimed.
He first put one piece of candy on Pei's stall and later dispersed the rest at different places around the county, in an attempt to deflect attention, according to police.
