Man held for blast at fast food outlet

POLICE yesterday detained a man for trying to blow up a fast food outlet in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province.

The 34-year-old suspect, Zhu Shibin, is alleged to have hidden a bomb in a Dicos restaurant in Suihua City on Sunday morning, police said.

He then telephoned the outlet and said he wanted 100,000 yuan (US$16,000) or he would detonate the bomb in five minutes.

Staff called police and two officers arrived two minutes later. They told staff and patrons to evacuate the building.

At 9:34am, the bomb exploded as a police officer was trying to move the bag in which it was hidden, Xinhua news agency said.

A witness surnamed Chen said he heard two loud bangs, adding that the force of the blasts broke all the windows on the first floor of the store and some on the second.

About five minutes later, a fire broke out on the second floor, and firefighters and medics arrived, Chen said.

Three police officers were injured in the explosion. Two of them — 25-year-old Wang Jiliang and 37-year-old Zou Defeng — are being treated for burns at a hospital in Harbin.

The blast knocked out the power to nearby residential buildings, according to the Heilongjiang Morning Post.

Zhu, who is unemployed, is a native of Harbin, the provincial capital.

He was detained about 4am yesterday in Daqing City, Xinhua said.

Police said the case is still under investigation.
