Man held over Chinese family slaying

Moroccan police have arrested a Briton of Chinese origin suspected of killing a Chinese family of four in central England more than a year ago, a police source said yesterday.

Du Anxiang, 52, "entered Tangiers illegally from the port and was arrested on Saturday-to-Sunday night after a short chase," the source told reporters, declining to be named.

"After having been alerted by Interpol, Moroccan security was mobilized in Tangiers where the suspect was arrested in the center of the town after an ID check," he said.

The source said Du would appear in court today for an extradition hearing.

British police said earlier that a man believed to be Du was arrested in Tangiers over the killing of university lecturer Ding Jifeng, 46, his wife Helen Chui, 47, and their daughters Xing, 18, and Alice, 12.

The four were stabbed to death at their home in Northampton on April 29, 2011.

"Detectives hunting for Du Anxiang have been informed by Moroccan law enforcement authorities that a man they strongly believe to be the suspect has been arrested," a Northamptonshire police spokesman said.

He said they would lodge a formal extradition application with the Home Office.

Du, 53, a former business associate of the family who lived in Coventry, also in central England, was named as the only suspect in the case shortly after the bodies were discovered.

But police had been unable to trace the man since he disappeared on the day of the murders, despite interviewing more than 2,000 people and viewing more than 5,000 hours of video surveillance footage.

Officers had traveled to Chinese communities across Britain and to eastern China's Zhejiang Province in their efforts to find Du, who had been locked in a legal dispute with the Ding family.

Ding worked in the chemistry and environmental sciences division at Manchester Metropolitan University, while his wife taught Mandarin part-time at a local business school.

In April, British police investigating the case arrested four people on suspicion of conspiracy to assist an offender, but all were released on bail pending further enquiries.
