Man held over fake bills

POLICE seized 144 counterfeit 100-yuan (US$16.05) bills and detained a suspect in a hostel in Daqing, a city in northeastern Heilongjiang Province.

Police received a tip about the suspect, whose name was not disclosed, according to Xu Yanjun, a local police officer.

The suspect said he bought the fake bills in Siping City in Jilin Province and used them in Daqing, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.

Police haven't said who they think made the counterfeit notes, all with the same serial number F9H6289365. Unlike the very high quality counterfeit notes with an HD90 prefix that have turned up in 10 provinces and regions since the end of 2008, these notes have a blurry watermark that can be recognized by money detectors, police said.

Authorities have stepped up their fight against counterfeiting banknote, long a problem. In September 2009, China's Supreme People's Court, Supreme People's Procuratorate and Ministry of Public Security issued a joint notice saying the leaders of counterfeit banknote rings can face the death penalty. That year, two farmers in Guangdong Province were executed for making fake notes with a face value of over 90 million yuan.
