Man held over hoax call that led to flight diversion

CHINESE police are holding a man suspected of sending a threatening message which caused a domestic flight to divert on Thursday, sources with the police said yesterday.

Xiong Yi, 29, was apprehended yesterday afternoon in a hotel in Dongguan City in southern province of Guangdong, according to the police of central China's Hubei Province, where Xiong lives.

Shenzhen Airlines received an anonymous phone call on Thursday evening after its flight ZH9706 took off from Xiangyang in Hubei for Shenzhen in Guangdong.

The flight landed at an airport in Hubei's capital Wuhan at 11:24pm out of concerns for passenger safety.

Police conducted a thorough inspection but found no dangerous items on the aircraft.

The incident is the second to occur within the week.

An Air China flight from Beijing to New York was forced to return to Beijing over a threatening message Wednesday evening.

Nothing amiss was discovered on that flight either.
