Man held over killings

A MAN has been detained by police in connection with the deaths of an elderly woman and her three-year-old granddaughter.

Huang Xiaogang, 38, was seized in Hainan Province's Danzhou City, on January 10.

He is alleged to have killed the two, stolen 1,300 yuan (US$197) and then set their house on fire on January 2, Xiaoxiang Morning Herald reported yesterday.

Huang knew the victims as he often played mahjong in the parlor run by the girl's father, Li Zetuan, and lived in the same building in Changsha County, Hunan Province, the report said.

Huang knew that only Li's daughter and mother-in-law would be at home while Li and his wife were running the mahjong parlor, Changsha police said.

They said he struck the woman with a hammer after she screamed for help. He killed the girl in the same way, police said.

He set fire to the home, trying to cover up his crime.

Shortly after, Li phoned to invite him to play mahjong.

Police said that Huang went to play for a while but returned to the crime scene to watch firefighters put out the fire.

Later he fled the county, police said.
