Man held over rape of 10 seniors aged up to 95, most too ashamed to alarm police
A man has been detained by police in connection with the rape of more than 10 elderly women in Xiayi County in central China’s Henan Province.
The women, aged between 73 and 95, were said to have lived alone after their children and their families left the area to seek work. According to police, the suspect, surnamed Wang, has admitted to nearly 40 instances of rape, sexual assault and burglary between spring 2011 and this March.
He is said to have sneaked into victims’ homes by prizing open locked doors or making a hole in a wall, he said.
In most cases, the elderly women felt too ashamed to report the attacks. However, in March an 83-year-old woman went her local police station and told officers that she had been raped. Wang was held on May 27, Chinese media reported.
