Man held over stabbing

POLICE in southwest China said yesterday that they had seized a man in connection with the fatal stabbing of a court officer last week.

He Shengkai, 29, was apprehended in Zunyi City, Guizhou Province, on Sunday, four days after he was alleged to have forced his way into the city's Intermediate People's Court, stabbing the officer and three other people.

A spokesman for the Zunyi Public Security Bureau said at a press conference that He had admitted carrying out the attack "out of resentment."

He was sentenced by a junior court in Zunyi to 2 1/2 years' jail in 2005 on charges of malicious wounding. His appeal against the decision was turned down by the intermediate people's court.

"He admitted he had sought revenge after he was released from prison in March last year," the spokesman said.

He is alleged to have broken into the intermediate court in downtown Zunyi at 4pm on Wednesday, stabbed the court policeman, two security guards and a woman clerk.

The policeman died in hospital that night. The other three are still being treated.
