Man held over toxic riverside pollution
THE owner of an illegal recycling company in Jiangsu Province has been detained on suspicion of dumping more than 500 barrels containing hazardous chemical waste along the banks of the Yangtze River.
The suspect, surnamed Jiang, allegedly collected the dangerous waste from chemical plants in Nanjing, Jiangsu's capital, and was paid 700 yuan (US$102.55) to 800 yuan per ton for the disposal service, Yangtze Evening Post reported yesterday.
Nanjing police received tip-offs at the end of January that someone had piled up the barrels containing industrial waste by the river.
Officers sent to the scene found that some of the chemical waste was dumped just a few hundred meters from a source of tap water.
The hazardous waste included organic cyanide, ether and organic chloride, which are categorized as toxic chemicals under state laws and deemed harmful to people on a variety of fronts, including the central nervous system and skin.
The chemical smell at the scene was strong and most plants in the immediate vicinity had wilted.
The batch of the hazardous material was then transported to a waste-disposal company and burned in a massive exercise, according to the newspaper report.
According to environment officials, the disposal cost more than 2 million yuan.
Officers staked the area out for several days and caught a suspect surnamed Bo.
According to Bo, most of the toxic chemicals were dumped by Jiang, who ran an illicit recycling outfit.
Jiang was nabbed at his home in Nanjing last month.
