Man home for holidays kills his 2 children and wife, commits suicide in Qinghai

A MAN killed his two young children and his wife with a knife and then committed suicide with the same blade Saturday night in a county in northwest China's Qinghai Province, China News Service reported.

It was one of a smattering of family homicides that have occurred over the Chinese New Year holiday period, which is normally a happy time of family reunions and celebration.

The husband, surnamed Cai, and his wife worked outside the county and were not seen in their home village very often, said a villager surnamed Zhang.

Cai and his wife had been together for 10 years and had had an unhappy marriage despite having a 7-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter, according to local police. The tragedy was attributed to a family feud but no details were released.

An unnamed village discovered the deaths. The villager rushed into their house after noticing their sheep still locked in a pen on Sunday morning, which was unusual.

Police said they believe the killing took place Saturday evening, the report said. An initial investigation ruled out an attack by an outside party and also found no evidence to support a rumor that Cai killed his family after drinking, the report said.

Another tragedy occurred in Yunnan Province on Chinese New Year’s Eve. A 38-year-old man who was accused of shooting six people to death and wounding three in Tengchong County was detained on February 5.

Police later found a rifle with 40 bullets remaining. Police said it is believed the man committed the killings after he became convinced his wife had had extramarital affairs.
