Man hurts family members in blaze

A MAN poured gasoline in an apartment and ignited a fire during a family gathering over an apparent property dispute on February 3, the first day of the Chinese traditional new year, killing himself and injuring seven relatives in Nanjing, capital city of Jiangsu Province.
The man surnamed Ying poured some gasoline in the kitchen, where his youngest sister was preparing dinner. Before others could react, Ying poured more gasoline in the living room and set it on fire, Nanjing-based Modern Express reported yesterday.
Ying, in his late sixties, stabbed his younger brother's wife three times when she tried to escape. The younger brother was slashed in the abdomen by Ying when he escaped with a gas cylinder. Ying's other sister jumped out of the second-floor apartment, causing injuries to her brain, the report said.
Ying was killed in the fire. A forensic doctor said Ying had consumed a lot of pesticides before setting the fire.
Ying, the oldest son, gathered with the families of his two younger brothers and two younger sisters in the house of his deceased parents on the first day of Chinese New Year.
Other relatives suspect he burned down the apartment over a property dispute with his siblings.
Ying may have held a grudge against his two brothers because they inherited their mother's apartment after she died in January, other relatives told the newspaper.
One family member described Ying as "shy, introverted and not good with words."
Liu Xiaochen, 24, Ying's niece, was the most seriously injured in the blaze. More than 50 percent of her skin was severely burned and her face was disfigured. She is being treated at Nanjing No. 1 Hospital.
After Liu regained consciousness, her first words were: "Don't blame my uncle. He deserved sympathy," according to the report.
Liu was hurt when she tried to rescue her parents from the fire. Her fingers may need to be amputated because they were severely burned.
She faces a series of skin graft surgeries and more than 500,000 yuan (US$75,924) in medical bills. Her boyfriend has posted her story online and asked for help to pool money to pay for her treatment.
