Man in court for sending 'parcel bomb' to supervisor

A man who injured his supervisor with a homemade "parcel bomb" in a revenge attack, stood trial under charges of causing an explosion, illegal possession of guns and bullets, and intentionally harming people in a Guangdong court yesterday.

The "bomb" sent by the suspect surnamed Xu, a bank clerk in southern China's Guangdong, caused several slight injuries to his supervisor, surnamed Chen's face and hands, Phoenix TV reported on its website today.

Xu allegedly held a grudge against Chen after an "unreasonable demotion and punishment" in 2008. The long-term dissatisfaction reached a breaking point when Chen delayed the payment of Xu's salary.

Xu's lawyer claimed that the "bomb" only emitted tear gas and white smoke, similar to ones used by police to disperse demonstrators, and was harmless.

"This is just a menace which won't hurt a lot," Xu told the court.

Some dynamite, guns and bullets were found in Xu's home, the police said. "Xu was a soldier and had served in army for 10 years."
