Man in court over blackmailing stars

A MAN is on trial in Beijing after allegedly blackmailing 20 entertainment and sports celebrities by claiming that had he obtained their nude photos and sex videos.

The man surnamed Wang shared a flat with a movie director in Beijing, today's Beijing News reported, citing Changping District People's Procuratorate Office.

He got the contact list of some stars from his roommate's computer in March when asked to help repair it, prosecutors said.

Eager to finance the medical bills for his mentally ill mother, who is paralyzed after jumping from her house, he sent phone messages to 20 stars claiming he had compromising pictures and videos, the report said. He asked each to transfer 300,000 yuan (US$43,946) to his bank account, or he would publicize the materials.

All the celebrities called police after receiving the messages, except one female who sent 3,000 yuan to Wang.
