Man in wheelchair sets off bomb at airport terminal
A MAN in a wheelchair set off a homemade bomb in a crowded terminal at Beijing's main airport yesterday evening, injuring himself but no one else.
Order was quickly restored and no flights were affected by the blast at Terminal 3, the airport's main international terminal, China Central Television said on its microblog.
Xinhua news agency said a Chinese man set off the device outside arrivals at Terminal 3 at Beijing Capital International Airport at 6:24pm.
The device was detonated after Ji Zhongxing, a 34-year-old from the eastern Shandong Province, was stopped from handing out leaflets highlighting a grievance, reported Xinhua, citing police.
Ji once worked in southern Guangdong Province and has been petitioning for more than 10 years regarding the alleged circumstances that resulted in him being paralysed, according to police investigation.
Ji was hurt in the blast, but his injuries are not life-threatening and he is receiving treatment, said Xinhua.
No one else was hurt in the blast, added the agency.
"The explosion was loud," said a witness who gave only his family name Chen.
Chen said he was 25 meters from the explosion when it occurred.
He said there was a single explosion, and that the terminal was crowded with people.
"Since there was no second explosion, many people took out their phones and gathered near the explosion spot to take photos," Chen added.
He said police responded immediately to the incident.
Photographs posted by CCTV on its microblog showed the area near the arrivals exit empty and filled with smoke.
One photograph showed medical staff and police officers gathering at one spot, with a wheelchair on its side nearby.
Terminal 3, which opened in 2008 just ahead of the Beijing Olympics, is the airport's hub for international flights.
United Airlines and American Airlines are among carriers operating out of the terminal.
