Man jailed 18 years for selling tiger
THE former boss of Three Gorges Forest Wild Animal World in Hubei Province has been sentenced to 18 years jail for selling protected animals, a Hubei newspaper reported today.
The Intermediate People's Court in Yichang City said Wang Zhuyi sold one tiger to businessman Jiang Shuyuan, who later killed it, in March last year, Chutian Metropolis Daily said.
Police found tiger bones and skin at Jiang's home on April 1. The court also accused Wang of selling monkeys.
A female Siberian tiger, aged between six and seven years, also had been found mutilated and skinned at the animal facility in December 2007, an earlier report said. An investigation of this matter continues.
Animal World had about 50 tigers when it opened to visitors in 2002, according to a report in Beijing News.
The 50 tigers can give birth to 20 tiger cubs every year so the number of tigers in the zoo should have been 150 by 2007, according to the Yichang Forestry Bureau.
However there were only 10 tigers in the zoo in 2007, the Beijing News report.
Wang was general manager of a restaurant and involved in other businesses before contracting to the zoo in 2006.
