Man jailed after hiding 6m yuan in pond

THE brother-in-law of Chongqing Municipality's former police chief has been sentenced to seven years in jail for concealing the corrupt cop's crimes by helping hiding 6 million yuan (US$878,916) of bribes in a pond.

Zhou Zexin was also fined 700,000 yuan by Shaqu District People's Court, today's www.cqnews.net reported.

Zhou's son Zhou Lifei was also jailed for five years with a fine of 500,000 yuan for his role in the case.

Zhou's sister, wife of Chongqing's former police chief Wen Qiang, first asked Zhou to keep money for her in 2004, the court was told. In 2006 she gave Zhou 400,000 yuan to buy trust investment products and in 2007 she gave him 500,000 yuan to operate illicit loans.

Most of the money was bribes taken by Wen, the report said.

In August last year, when Wen was investigated for corruption, Zhou asked his son to wrap up 6 million yuan in cash and valuables from his sister and hid them in a pond in suburban Yubei District.
