Man jumps in front of subway to commit suicide
A MAN committed suicide by jumping in front of a moving subway train in Beijing this morning, causing a delay across the city's Metro network.
Based on a platform surveillance video of South Lishi Road Station, the death appeared to have been intentional, Xinhua News Agency reported.
The victim was in his twenties and was not from Beijing. No other details of the victim or the accident were revealed.
The incident occurred during morning rush hour around 8:25am. Many commuters were stranded at stations on the city's six subway lines and had to take other forms of public transport. Normal service resumed within about 30 minutes.
After the incident, people called for more safety measures at Beijing's Metro and railway stations.
Meanwhile, a video showing a girl killed by a Line 2 subway train in Beijing has circulated on the Internet and aroused debate over Metro safety.
Today's death adds to the growing number of people committing suicide across the country via Metros.
Sixty-five people have tried to kill themselves on Shanghai's subway network since 1995, 48 ended in deaths.
