Man killed by speeding bullet train
A SPEEDING bullet train struck and killed a man on Saturday afternoon in Weifang City of Shandong Province, today's Beijing News reported.
The local Jinan Railway Bureau confirmed the fatal accident yesterday and said the train from Shandong's Qingdao City to Beijing was delayed by 15 minutes.
The train ran over the man, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, at 2.20pm when it was traveling through Weifang at more than 200 kilometers per hour, a bureau official surnamed Wang told the newspaper.
Wang said he did not understand how the man happened to be on the railway lines which are protected by barriers.
He said the man might have been a maintenance worker.
"The train braked not long after passing the Weifang Railway Station at around 2.30pm," a passenger surnamed Li told the newspaper.
Crew told the passengers that the train needed to stop to deal with an accident, he said.
"But they didn't specify what the accident was," he said. The crew refused to answer passengers' questions about the accident.
The train moved off about 20 minutes later and arrived at Beijing South Railway Station at 6.50pm, 15 minutes behind schedule, the passenger said.
Li said the front of the train was damaged and bloodstained.
