Man kills five in wife's family
POLICE in Yunnan Province yesterday caught a man who allegedly killed five members of his wife's family, including a girl aged three and a 38-day-old baby, before setting their house on fire, following years of bickering with his wife.
Police said they nabbed He Guoquan, a 25-year-old Yunnan native, from a village near the place where the murder took place in Yunlong County, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, the local City Times reported yesterday.
The suspect's wife Li Ping, whose parents, elder sister and two nieces were found dead in their burning house last Monday, said she received a phone call from He on Monday evening, claiming he would surrender to police following the rampage, City Times said.
A witness Li Guojun found the five unconscious and covered with knife wounds on the floor inside their house, which was on fire, at 9am last Monday. He raced to move the five out, but they were pronounced by police to have been hacked to death.
The house was almost burnt down, the newspaper said.
Li Ping revealed that she became He's girlfriend after they were introduced by her aunt two years ago, but wanted to end the relationship several times because she had no feelings for him.
However, they still tied the knot in June as He was insistent.
She said He suffered from self-contempt and was of a suspicious nature, which led to many quarrels. When she asked for a divorce in October, He told her to drink a bottle of insecticide.
Li Ping later fled home and changed her mobile number to avoid being caught by He.
