Man kills himself in toilet ahead of demolition
A 66-year-old village Party official in Rugao, Jiangsu Province was found burned to death in a toilet on Sunday as he was about to give up his house for demolition, Modern Express reported.
Police has ruled out foul play in his death after initial investigation. Wu Yongzhong's relatives told the newspaper that Wu might have committed suicide as he was under a lot of stress recently over the demolition of his village.
Police said Wu had already signed an agreement for relocation and he was supposed to move out of the Heyang Village on Sunday.
Wu's brother-in-law, surnamed Zhou, said local authorities had talked to Wu, asking him to serve as a role model for other villagers to follow.
"He cared about his reputation and did make himself an example," Zhou said. "However, villagers grew suspicious of his motivation and this brought him tremendous stress."
Zhou also told the newspaper that the night before Wu's death, they had dinner together. Wu appeared depressed and expressed his love for the old house.
The relatives said Wu went to the toilet at about 5am on Sunday and then the tragedy happened.
A Rugao government official said their investigation found no evidence that Wu committed suicide under the pressure of demolition and the cause will be found through further investigation.
