Man kills lover then surrenders at police station
A GOVERNMENT official in Anhui Province strangled his mistress to death and fled 500 kilometers to Hubei Province with the body in his car before giving himself up to the local police.
Prosecutors approved the arrest of the suspect, a district deputy director in Xuancheng City, it was announced yesterday.
The suspect, Zhang Hongbin, 44, met the victim, a consulting firm leader surnamed Mei, 26, in August at her firm's launch ceremony.
They began an extramarital affair in October. Mei then asked Zhang to finance her firm several times, but he refused, leading to a breakdown in their relationship.
Their conflict escalated and Zhang killed her in a quarrel at Mei's apartment about 4pm last Wednesday.
He dragged the woman's body to the car about 10pm that night and then drove to Hubei Province.
He gave himself up at Huangshi Public Security Bureau on Thursday afternoon.
Police found Mei's body with no external injuries on the back seat of his car.
Zhang had no specific destination at first and said he just wanted to leave Xuancheng as soon as possible, according to local media.
The police did not have an explanation for why the suspect suddenly decided to end his escape attempt in another province.
After verifying his identity, Hubei police sent him back to Xuancheng the same day.
