Man lets mom, 89, perish on doorsteps
A MAN in Jiangsu Province was sentenced to three years in jail for leaving his 89-year-old mother to die on the doorsteps of his house.
Lin Lanzhu was found crouching outside his son Chen Bingsheng's house, dead, after a storm last July. Chen and his wife Li Hua refused to let the old woman inside the house or gave her any food for seven days before Lin died.
A court in Taixing City sentenced Chen to three years in jail and Li to one and half years in jail on an 18-month probation for the crime of abandonment, Procuratorial Daily under the Supreme People's Procuratorate reported yesterday.
The couple locked the old woman outside the house because she ate too much for lunch one month earlier, the report said.
"They called her bad names and told her to die," the report quoted a neighbor as saying. The couple beat up Chen's elder sister who tried to take her mother to her home. They also shouted at other villagers who gave food and quilts to the old woman.
Lin died after seven days crouching outside her own son's house, crying while her son cursed her from time to time inside the house. Chen and his wife did not look at Lin even once before she died from freezing and starvation.
When Chen was arrested, he told police it was only his family's business.
It took a court order to make Chen and his younger brother start a monthly rotation to feed their mother, the report said. But Chen Bingsheng confessed in court he didn't want to do that because he hated his mother for stopping him from cutting down a tree in the yard.
