Man locked up for months as he refuses to relocate

A WOMAN in central Henan Province is seeking help for her 74-year-old father who has been in police custody for nearly half year on charges of extortion as he refused to accept local government's demolition compensation.

Liu Suxiang in Changyuan County said her father Liu Yushan was taken away by police on May 25 for extorting a real estate developer for 30,000 yuan (US$4,512) to demolish his house, Henan Daily reported today.

But the company, Changcheng, said it never reported to police for being blackmailed and the money they gave Liu Yushan was for growing trees in his farmland in 2005.

Liu's lawyer, Fan Yongzhi, said Liu and seven other families refused to move out because the government compensation was too low, even though other households had left and their water and power supply was cut off in 2008.

Local authorities talked with Liu several times but got no where. Liu was detained on May 11. A week later, a senior district police officer, Xin Shouqian, visited him in cell with food and beer, and said he was free to go if he accepted the compensation offer.
