Man lost at Forbidden City takes a 100k hike

A 73-year-old man who attempted to walk 2,000 kilometers back to his hometown after becoming separated from his tour group while on a visit to the Forbidden City in Beijing was found lost and confused 100km away in Tianjin.

The senior citizen, surnamed Yu, said he lost touch with his fellow travelers as they were exploring the Palace Museum, as the former residence of China’s emperors is formally known, on October 13, the Wenzhou Metropolis Daily reported.

The native of Rui’an, east China’s Zhejiang Province, was on only the second day of a six-day trip, but after losing his way decided his best course of action was to head home — a journey of about 2,000km.

“I asked some men in uniforms at the museum for help, but they couldn’t understand my accent,” he was quoted as saying.

On the journey home, however, Yu became disoriented and ended walking to Tianjin, where a member of the public spotted him and took him to the local police station, the report said.

When asked why he didn’t contact a member of his family, Yu said that he didn’t have any of their phone numbers with him.

“I will never travel again,” he said.
